Broken Garage Door Spring Repairs — Toowoomba & the Darling Downs
You hear a loud bang from the garage, then the door refuses to lift — or it lifts a few inches and slams shut. The opener motor strains, the door feels impossibly heavy by hand, and you can sometimes see a visible gap in the spring above the door.

Likely cause
Garage door springs do almost all the lifting work. A standard torsion spring is rated for around 10,000 cycles — about 7 to 10 years of normal use in Toowoomba conditions. Salt-laden air from coastal trips, dust, temperature swings on the Downs and an under-spec spring shorten that further. When the metal fatigues, the spring snaps under tension, leaving the door unbalanced and unsafe to operate.
What we do to fix it
We measure the door weight, drum size and existing spring (wire gauge, inside diameter, length) and fit a correctly matched replacement — usually a higher-cycle spring than the original. We replace springs in matched pairs on dual-spring doors, re-balance the door, lubricate the tracks and rollers, test the auto-reverse safety, and reset the opener limits so it doesn't burn out trying to lift an unbalanced door.
Typical turnaround
Most spring repairs are completed in a single visit, usually within 1–3 business days of your call. Emergency same-day callouts are available for jobs where the door is stuck in the open position and the home is unsecured.
One in-house multi-trade team — no subcontractors
Every job is completed by our own technicians. We're a family-owned, locally-owned business with the door fitters, gate fabricators, motor specialists and electricians all in-house, so the person who diagnoses your problem is the person who fixes it. No middle-men, no finger-pointing, no "we'll have to send someone else" — just one team accountable for the whole repair, backed by our written workmanship warranty.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a garage door spring replacement cost in Toowoomba?
Most single-spring replacements fall between $350 and $550 fitted, and dual-spring jobs between $550 and $850. Heavy custom doors and oversized commercial doors cost more. We give you a firm price before any work starts.
Can I just replace one spring on a dual-spring door?
We don't recommend it. Both springs were installed at the same time and have done the same number of cycles, so the second one is usually weeks or months from failing. Replacing both at once costs less than two separate callouts.
Is it safe to use my garage door with a broken spring?
No. The opener motor isn't designed to lift the full weight of the door on its own and will burn out, and the cables can come off the drums under uneven load. Disconnect the opener and leave the door in the down position until we arrive.
How long does a new spring last?
We fit higher-cycle springs as standard — typically rated for 15,000–20,000 cycles. For an average household opening the door 4 times a day that's roughly 10 to 14 years.
Do you carry springs on the van?
We stock the most common torsion sizes for B&D, Steel-Line, Gliderol, Stoddart and Centurion doors. Unusual sizes are couriered overnight from our suppliers.
